It makes a lot of sense - teens are always intrigued and attracted to that which is prohibited and the States has always been so strict about enforcing the drinking age that it's no surprise that it backlashes and some college kids are in a constant drunken stupor.
I live in Spain and alcohol is a big part of Spanish life. People here have been drinking wine with their meals for years, blue collar workers drink brandy + anisette for breakfast and finicky eating kids used to be given vermouth to open their appetite. The legal age to buy alcohol in Spain is 16.
The botellón , however, is a fairly new and worrisome phenomenon which doesn't hold with what the article says. (Botellón = binge drinking in open spaces like parks or plazas.)
I do think that the drinking age in the US (21!) is way too high, though. |
